Google Earth Click on this link: GDBR.kmz to download the Bike Ride path in Google Earth format. Unsure about what to do with this? Click here for a brief tutorial written by our webmaster, Simon. Route Profile Click here to open an alternative map page. The map is complimented by a route profile giving a graphical representation of the ascents and descents encountered along the route. The page will open in a new window and is formatted to be more suitable for printing. The following is for people with GPS devices What we have done is to follow the route whilst recording the track with a Garmin GPS. This track has been extracted and can be downloaded here: GDBR.gdb. This file is zipped - Windows XP can handle zip archives. Users of older systems will need WinZip or similar (try www.winzip.com) In theory, you should be able to import this track in to your GPS software so that you can follow the route on your own GPS. The track was recorded on a Garmin GPSMAP 60C and the data extracted using Garmin's Mapsource software. If you use Mapsource with your GPS then the download above can be opened directly in the software. From there you can export the track to your GPS from within Mapsource. There are a couple of assumptions: a) that all track data is universal. This may not be the case and sadly we do not have the resources to find out. b) that you have a PC interface for your own GPS and you know how to use it and the accompanying software. Please don't expect us to support you with this - our resources are limited and our free time is extremely scarce! If you are successful with using the download, perhaps you could let us know; Send us a short e-mail listing the make and model of GPS and the software you have used. If you had to devise any tricks or hacks to get things to work then please describe what you had to do. We will keep an updated list of this data on this page. For those with a GPS but can't use this data We have compiled a short list of key waypoints for the route. It shouldn't take more than ten or fifteen minutes to load them in manually and there should be enough of them to keep you going in the right direction. The waypoint numbers correspond to the yellow markers on the route map.
Alternative Downloads For those of you using Memory Map software, we have compiled the route as a track. Click here to download the file: gps-track.mmo Again, this file is zipped. Once the file is saved and extracted on your computer you can open it in Memory Map and export the track to your GPS. For those who can import text data, or for those who want more detail than in the table above, we have listed the track points (all 223 of them!) as a text file. This file includes the distance and bearing from one point to the next in addition to the Latitude and Longitude of each point. You could use this data to add the track manually to your GPS but we feel it would probably be quicker to just get on your bike and ride it! Click here to download: trackpoints.txt The above data is also available as an Excel type web page. If you have a fairly recent version of Microsoft Office this page will let you open the data using Excel. Some GPS software can use data in this format, so it may be useful for someone! Disclaimer The downloads and data on this site are supplied without warranties of any sort. Please note that you use the data at your own risk. We can't think of any reason not to use it but we're saying all this just so you can't sue us if your computer breaks whilst you do. Similarly, we have been very careful in compiling the navigational data. However, please watch where you are going - we don't want to be responsible for you steering in to a ditch or going for a swim in Poole Harbour! |
